How often should my baby watch this baby channel on Direct TV?

February 28th, 2009
BloodAppleKiss asked:

I ordered this baby channel on direct tv and it’s made for newborns to like 4 yr olds and It’s AMAZING! Id recommend it to any parent. My 3 month old just LOVES IT! And alot of it is interactive so that I can play with her while she watches it. I love it because now that she’s getting older it’s like she’s been soooo bored! But I was wondering how often I should let her watch it? I don’t think it’s good for her to watch it allllll day even if im playing with her most of the time. The channel is VERY educational for her though but can anyone give me some info on this if you have this channel or something like it? If you don’t have this channel and want to answer please understand that this channel is NOT like sponge bob or even sesame street! It’s specifically for INFANTS to toddlers and it really helps them learn and it even has nighttime programs to help them sleep good.

Baby Pillows - Should I Give My Child a Pillow?

February 26th, 2009

Chris Towland asked:

As adults it is perfectly normal and expected that we use a pillow when we sleep. In fact, sleeping without a pillow can be quite painful and leave us waking up with a stiff neck or perhaps even stopping us getting to sleep in the first place.

It is therefore no surprise that many parents wonder whether their child would also be more comfortable if given a baby pillow.

The answer to the question though, is dependent on the age of your child, and also where they are sleeping…….

If your child is younger than two years old, a pillow is definitely not recommended. A child under this age will normally not need a support for his or her head and more importantly there is always some risk of them suffocating on the pillow. Also, if your child is still of this young age but has started climbing, crawling or walking then the pillow could be used as an aid to climbing out of their crib.

Therefore, most research suggests that normally a pillow should not be considered until the baby is at least two years old and is also no longer sleeping in a crib but has progressed to a toddler bed.

Even when your child is slightly older though, it is not always necessary for them to use a pillow. If they are sleeping well without a pillow then there is probably no need to introduce one.

If and when you do decide to give your child a pillow, make sure it is an actual ‘baby sleep pillow’ rather than just one you already have in your house. The pillow should be relatively firm so that the child cannot sink into it whilst sleeping and be smothered or suffocated. It should also be smaller than a regular adult pillow, possibly around the size of a travel pillow and be easily washable for when your child has those little accidents. If your child suffers from any allergies you will also be able to buy a baby pillow that is non-allergenic

If you are still uncertain as to whether the time is right to introduce a baby pillow to your child’s bed you may wish to consider speaking to your doctor to get his or her input or just waiting until your child actually asks for a pillow or shows some signs of struggling to sleep on a flat bed.

Activities for Toddlers to Enjoy

February 23rd, 2009

Priyanka Arora asked:

A child goes through a lot of stages in life. This is the time that they develop from a little baby, toddler stage then adolescence. Each stage that they undergo is loaded with fun, learning, entertainment and a lot of activities. We may not see a child who is over active and is willing to learn especially on their toddler stage. This is the best time where they can learn to the highest level. Everything that he will adapt on this pace will be brought along as he grows older. Toddlers usually would learn what is right and wrong during the activities that they go through. He will discover a lot and learn from everything that he does.

Parents have a lot of choices when it comes to the activities that their children may enjoy. The parents are responsible for whatever their child has to be involved with because from each activity that he perform he will develop physically, socially, and emotionally. Therefore, parents must be able to choose what activities that they will let their child goes through.

Let your child pick up household objects and let him identify each one. But be careful to not let him reach the harmful items. These are vital for the development of the child’s mind. Make him create a bean bag by giving him enough amounts of dried beans and socks. Just be careful that he doesn’t place these beans in his mouth to avoid choking. At night, you can perform a flashlight game and tell stories or make shadows with the flashlights.

Parenting is a Big Responsibility

February 23rd, 2009

Alvaro Castillo asked:

“Don’t do as I do. Do as I say.” That is the advice many of us have heard all our lives, especially when we were youngsters. That is about the poorest advice we will ever receive. It just doesn’t work that way. The truth is, the very advice we follow is the example we see from those we respect the most. Being an example is a role we inherit but may not want. Make no mistake about it, however: we are all in that position at one time or another.

As a parent, you might ask the question, “How proud would I be if my child grew up to be just like me?” The parent that drives like a maniac, then says to his teenage son, “Be careful,” should not complain when the boy returns home with a speeding ticket.

The coach that yells and screams at the officials cannot be surprised when his star player gets a technical foul for unsportsmanlike conduct. After all, the example speaks much louder than the words you say. There is an ancient proverb that says, “What you teach your child, you teach your child’s child.” Oh, how often I have experienced this in my own life.

The exact traits I seen from my own dad I see mirrored in my own children and even my grandchildren. It is an awesome responsibility being a parent, but being an example for others happens in all walks of life. The teacher, the preacher, the business person and even the town bum all set an example that others follow.

There is a poem I read that challenges me and says much better than I can write the importance of living your testimony instead of just talking it. It goes like this:

I’d rather see a sermon, than to hear one, any day.

I’d rather one should walk with me, than merely show the way.

I can soon learn how to do it, if you’ll let me see it done;

I can watch your hands in action, but your tongue too fast may run!

All the speeches you deliver, may be wise and true,

But I’d rather get my lessons by observing what you do.

Though I may not understand you, and the fine advice you give,

There is no misunderstanding how I see you act and live!

In the sports world, they put it this way, “It is easy to talk the talk, but you had better be able to walk the walk.” Make no mistake about it, the fine advice you give will never take the place of how you act and live.

Inexpensive Ideas for a Baby Shower

February 17th, 2009
parenting babies and toddlers
Meena Kumari asked:

A few guests can get together and get a big laundry basket. Place in it a long clothes line with outfits, diapers, bibs, etc. pinned to it. It can also be used as a room decoration. It has a bit of everything and something to carry it in!

Baby Quilt - here is a great gift from those that love to sew and quilt. Find an alphabet quilt pattern. Each square has a letter of the alphabet on it and a picture of an object that started with that letter. It can have numbers too. Each guest can be given/sent a square before the shower and can embroider, quilt, or embellish it according to her own taste. If the quilt is meant to be a wall hanging, guests can also attach little items like rattles and toys. Be sure that everyone signs their own block in some way and have the blocks returned by a certain date in order to have it put together. This can also be used as a decoration at the shower.

Make a scrapbook album. Take blank scrapbook pages and have everyone write down their well wishes (without Mom knowing it) for the new baby. This can be done at or before the shower and can be given at the shower or to Mom while she is in the hospital. If given after the shower, it can include photos taken there.

Pass out sheets of heavy paper decorated with baby related stamps, stickers, or pictures several lines drawn on. Have the guests write their name on the paper and then write down some baby/parenting advice. Once everyone is finished, collect them, add a cover, punch holes in it, and tie it together with some ribbon. Then hand it to Mom to read aloud. This will be entertaining as well as touching and is a nice keepsake. There is tons of room for creativity on this one.

Have each guest bring an extra gift (small item recommended) for Daddy-to-be and the host of the shower will then place them in large gift bag to present to him at the close of the party (usually after the main gifts are opened). He opens this with Mommy-to-be at home or in presence of close family or friends.

Diaper Shower— For a second (or more) baby, consider a diaper shower. Ask each guest to bring only a package of diapers as a gift. Some guests may bring other gifts also, but Mom will end up with a mountain of diapers, something she will really need! Items could also include anything associated with diapering such as wipes, ointment, powder, etc.

Casserole Shower— For the mother who has everything already, how about a Casserole Shower? Have each guest bring a casserole or other ready-to-cook meal that can be frozen or stored until after the baby is born. Be sure to have the containers clearly labeled with contents and any cooking instructions. How helpful that will be when Mom and Baby come home!

Book Party— Have each guest purchase and give a copy of their favorite childhood book.

adopting twins or triplets or more?

February 11th, 2009
Ellen S asked:

My parents adopted me 13 years ago from newborn and are wanting to adopt again through private adoption.Of course will be in heaven with one child, but I’d still kinda like for them to adopt twins, trpilets, ect. What are the odds of adopting more than one babys or toddlers?Race doesn’t matter, and it they are willing to adopt a child that might have special needs. And yes we could adopt more than 1 baby from different mothers, but it’s almost impossible to find 1 birthmother much less 2 or more. And does anyone know how to go about finding a birthmother around where we live (West virginia). My parents got lucky when they adopted me.My bio dad knew my adoptive parents. They really weren’t looking to adopt 13 years ago when they adopted me but knew I needed a home.Thinks in advance. And please serious answers only please.

How do we differ from Christians?

February 8th, 2009
Orion asked:

An excellent question asked of me: how are you any different?

I can begin by saying I do not believe in a God whose book claims he drowned all humanity, including newborns, infants, toddlers, little kids … Take the blinders off for a moment and visualize the horror they and their parents experienced drowning. Their book says Their God did that to those little kids.

For another, I do not persecute minorities whose rights and freedoms depend upon the whim of the majority. Holier-than-thou christians will persecute gays while ignoring their own miserable track record with morality and human rights. They try to remove the mote from our eyes but their imperfections would leave us blind.

I prefer to persecute bullies, not their victims.

And that is the other way in which I differ: I really don’t care about popularity where intellectual integrity and human rights are concerned. No book will convince me to turn a blind eye to injustice or bigotry: god-made or man-made.
All of his followers, as SOME are not correcting SOME.
